Jeffrey S. Adler (Ph.D. Harvard University, 1986) is Professor of History and Criminology and holds a joint appointment in the Department of History and in the Department of Criminology, Law and Society. His research and teaching focus on the history of violent crime in America and U.S. urban history, and his most recent book is First in Violence, Deepest in Dirt: Homicide in Chicago, 1875-1920 (Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 2006). His earlier books examined the growth of western cities in the nineteenth century and race relations in the twentieth-century city, and he has published articles in history, criminology, and sociology journals and in law reviews on topics ranging from domestic violence to prostitution. He teaches courses on U.S. urban history, the history violence and social conflict, the history of American criminal justice, and nineteenth-century America.
