I study twentieth-century United States history and focus on political developments, therapeutic innovations, the War on Drugs, and correctional systems for young people. My dissertation explains the origins of America's troubled teen industry (TTI) by examining the evolution of guided group interaction (GGI) in the United States from World War II until 1974. In addition to future books and journal articles on the history of GGI and the TTI, I am also planning an interdisciplinary collaboration to establish and preserve a crowdsourced, open access digital repository that allows individuals and communities to preserve and research private sector correctional systems associated with coercive confinement, the TTI, and adult drug courts.
