> Joseph Angelillo (Ph.D., 2024) was appointed to a lecturer (permanent instructor) position at the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa.
Defenses
> Joseph Angelillo defended his dissertation “The Lost Promise of Purposeful Inclusion: Movements for Racially Representative Juries during Reconstruction” under the supervision of Professor Elizabeth Dale.
> Robert Lierse completed his Ph.D. dissertation, entitled “Manning the Frontier: The Exportation of Masculinity and the Forging of the Carolingian Empire” with Professor Florin Curta.
Admission
The department welcomes 11 new graduate students in the 2024-25 academic year:
- Mary Adkins will pursue a Ph.D. in modern U.S. history under the supervision of Professor Jack E. Davis.
- Incoming master’s student Andrew Harrison will study the history of Brazilian revolutions with Associate Professor Heather Vrana.
- Kristen Heymer joins the program as a Ph.D. student in Iberian Atlantic history with supervisor Assistant Professor Max Deardorff.
- Joshua Hwang will write a master’s thesis on Soviet history with Associate Professor Seth Bernstein.
- Master’s student Jennifer Izquierdo will build on her history honors thesis work by conducting research on medieval European history with Professor Florin Curta.
- Beginning his doctoral study in the history of medieval Byzantium is James Knight, who will work with Professor Florin Curta.
- Rutendo Rangisi will conduct Ph.D. study on the history of gender and sexuality in modern Africa with co-supervisors Professor Nancy Hunt and Professor Miles Larmer.
- James Sheehan will pursue a master’s degree in medieval European legal history with Professor Florin Curta.
- Ph.D. student Claudia Suarez will work on the history of cultural exchange between Latin America and the Soviet Union with co-supervisors Associate Professor Seth Bernstein and Professor Lillian Guerra.
- Nmesoma Ugwu will write about gender in modern African history as a Ph.D. student with Assistant Professor Philip Janzen.
- Ph.D. student Zachary Wilmoth will work with Assistant Professor Philip Janzen on modern African history.
