Defenses

Chris Calton defended “Monstrous Monopolies and Vicious Competition: The General Incorporation Movement in Nineteenth-Century America” with supervisor Professor Sean Adams.

Daniel Fernandez defended his dissertation, “Comrades and Internationalists: Forging Identity and Cuban Solidarity with the Other Spain, 1902-1961,” with supervisor Professor Lillian Guerra.

Oren Okhovat defended his thesis, “Cosmopolitan Empire: Portuguese Jewish Merchants and Iberian Imperialism in the Seventeenth-Century Atlantic,” under the supervision of Associate Professor Nina Caputo.

Catherine Stiefel defended her dissertation in August 2023. Her dissertation is “The Impression of Freedom: The Resilience and Resistance of Virtual Slaves in the Antebellum Southern Legal Regime” and was supervised by Professor Elizabeth Dale.

Placement

The department’s PhD candidates and alumni accepted the following teaching positions in the past year:

  • Kevin Bird (PhD 2022) began a position as Lecturer and Experiential Learning Coordinator at the Bob Graham Center at the University of Florida.
  • Chris Calton (PhD 2023) was hired as a teacher at the Independent Institute, Oakland, CA.
  • Andrea Ferreira (PhD 2022) is now Academic Coordinator for the Global Education Network, in Sydney, Australia.
  • Meagan Frenzer has assumed the role of Assistant Professor of History at Santa Fe College.

 

Admission

The Department welcomes five new graduate students entering the program in 2023-24:

  1. Ifeoma Aneke will work on the history of medicine in Africa with Professor Nancy Hunt and Assistant Professor Philip Janzen.
  2. In the European section, Kelsey Zelinsky will pursue a doctorate in the history of the early modern Atlantic World with Assistant Professor Max Deardorff and Associate Professor Nina Caputo.
  3. Alexey Kotelvas will begin his program in Soviet history with Associate Professor Seth Bernstein.
  4. Agnieszka Ilwicka-Karuna is undertaking a PhD in the history of the Holocaust with Professor Natalia Aleksiun.
  5. In U.S. history, Weilan Ge is starting a degree with Professor Jack Davis on environmental and urban history.
