This list is presented as a convenient means for identifying and accessing awards available to undergraduates at the University of Florida. Research Awards
Many libraries and archives have research grants that can support short trips to the repository. If you are interested in working at a library or archive, check its website to see whether they offer support. Below are a few examples of research grants that are offered regularly.
MOODY RESEARCH GRANT, LBJ LIBRARY, AUSTIN, TX

COLLEGE FELLOWSHIPS IN AMERICAN HISTORY, GILDER LEHRMAN CENTER
The fellowship provides up to $3000 for research at the Gilder Lehrman Collection and at other archives in New York City. The repository contains more than eighty-five thousand items documenting the political, social, and economic history of the United States. National and International Fellowships
For additional information regarding national and international scholarships, please see the UF Prestigious Fellowships site. Many of these fellowships are for graduating seniors planning to undertake postgraduate study.
FULBRIGHT
The Fulbright program is one of the best-known international exchanges in the world. It sponsors college graduates who want to spend up to a year abroad doing research or teaching English. Students should have an appropriate level of awareness of the language and culture of the proposed region. For instance, applicants who wish to do oral history interviews would need to be fluent in the local language, whereas English teaching assistants would need less language training. Fulbright awards pay travel, tuition and a monthly stipend. The availability of fellowships and the number of applications differ significantly from country to country. Studying Fulbright’s statistics can help you maximize your chances for a successful application. In other words, it is a lot easier to get a fellowship to teach English in a less popular host country like Estonia than in a very popular host country like France. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Gilman Program broadens the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints. One goal of the Gilman program is to encourage students to choose non-traditional study abroad destinations such as the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South America. The program aims to support students who are traditionally underrepresented in study abroad, including students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. To be eligible, students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. BARRY GOLDWATER
Designated for undergraduates in math and all sciences and engineering. Awards are made to sophomores for two years, to juniors for one year. Scholarship pays all tuition and fees up to $7,500/year to students planning to pursue careers and mathematics and science (but not in medical practice). Foundation awards up to 300 scholarships. ROTARY
If you have at least junior standing, plan to study abroad, and possess the qualities to be a strong “ambassador of goodwill” before, during, and after the time you study abroad, you should consider applying for a Rotary Peace Scholarship. These fellowships pay for MA degree programs or certificate programs abroad.
HARRY TRUMAN
This award is for third-year students who plan to pursue a career in public service and plan to further their education beyond their Bachelor’s degree. Students are awarded generous funding ($30,000 as of 2022) of graduate and/or professional school. Students who apply should be active in community service, campus involvement, leadership, and/or various levels of government. MORRIS UDALL
Awarded to undergraduates during sophomore or junior year for next academic year(s) to pursue studies related to leadership, public service, and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or to the environment. GRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS & SCHOLARSHIPS (GRADUATING SENIORS)
BOREN FELLOWSHIPS
Boren Scholars and Fellows study critical languages throughout the world and represent a variety of academic and professional disciplines. Boren is funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP), which focuses on geographic areas, languages, and fields of study deemed critical to U.S. national security. Applicants identify how their study abroad programs or overseas projects, as well as their future academic and career goals, will contribute to U.S. national security, recognizing the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness. DAAD GERMAN ACADEMIC EXCHANGE FELLOWSHIP
See the DAAD site here.The DAAD undergraduate scholarship is designed to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities with extremely generous funding packages. German language ability is not a requirement for the grant, but successful applicants should have the language skills that will be necessary in order to complete their study/research goals. There is no campus application process; students apply online but the External Scholarship & Fellowship Coordinator (contact below) is happy to advise and assist in crafting applications. CHURCHILL
Study abroad award designed for exceptional students in mathematics, science and/or engineering to pursue graduate study at Churchill College of Cambridge University. Awards cover all tuition and fees, plus living allowance, which varies depending on length of academic program, and $1,500 travel allowance. Only 10 awarded annually. GATES CAMBRIDGE SCHOLARSHIP
The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are available for graduate study at the University of Cambridge in England. Information about the fellowship available here.
GEORGE J. MITCHELL
Named in honor of the former senator’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, these scholarships allow American post-graduates to pursue one year of study at institutions of higher learning in Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Scholarship will be awarded to students who have shown both academic distinction and the potential for leadership. There are no restrictions as to academic field of study. Scholars will be selected in fall will begin their studies the following fall. Finalists will be invited to Washington, D.C. for an interview before the selection committee in November. JAMES MADISON
Designated for students in history and social sciences who plan to enter secondary school teaching; at least one award per state; includes expenses paid summer workshop. Applications due March 1 each year. For more information see the scholarship site.
MARSHALL SCHOLARSHIP
A competitive scholarship for study in the United Kingdom. Open to all fields of study in fine arts, arts and humanities, social sciences, sciences, business, and engineering. Available subjects vary according to the university. Competition includes essay, campus, and district interviews. Students must be under age 26, preferably single. Only 40 awarded nationally but 5 must come from the southern area. Both graduating seniors and current graduate students are encouraged to apply through UF. See the Marshall site here. RHODES SCHOLARSHIP
Study at Oxford. Open to all fields of study in fine arts, liberal arts and sciences, and some business and engineering. Students apply during the senior year for two years of study at Oxford. Applicants must be single and under age 24. Competition includes written essay, campus, state and regional interviews. Only 32 awarded, 4 from the southern area. See the Rhodes Scholarship website. SCHWARZMAN SCHOLARS
One year Masters degree in public policy, international relations, or economics and business at Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions of higher education. Schwarzman Scholars is a program designed to help future leaders meet the challenges of the 21st century and beyond by preparing them to better understand China’s culture, economy, governance and motivations. This fully-funded program provides for a year of study and cultural immersion, attending lectures, traveling and developing first-hand exposure to China and its people.
